Correlation between seminal plasma fructose concentration and sperm density, motility, and morphology in male patients with infertility

Objective To explore the relationship between seminal plasma fructose concentration and sperm density, motility, and morphology in male patients with infertility.Methods Sperm density and motility in semen samples which were obtained from 260 male patients with infertility(infertility group) and 90 male controls(fertile group) were analyzed by computer assisted sperm analysis(CASA), the sperm morphology was analyzed by semiautomatic sperm morphology analyzer, and the seminal plasma fructose concentration was measured by spectrophotometer.Results Seminal plasma fructose concentration in infertile group was significantly lower than that in fertile group(P 0.01).Sperm density in abnormal fructose group was significantly higher than that in normal fructose group(P 0.05).There were no differences in sperm motility and morphology between abnormal and normal fructose group(P 0.05).A significant negative correlation was observed between seminal plasma fructose concentration and sperm density(r =-0.17, P 0.01).Conclusion Seminal plasma fructose concentration is apparently related to sperm density in patients with infertility, but is not related to sperm motility and morphology.
