Abstract

Objective:To study the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on memory function and cortical cholinergic system in dementia mimetic rats. Methods:Dementia mimetic rat model was established with aluminum chloride solution subcutaneously given. The effect of acupuncture on cholinergic M-receptor bonding capacity and cholinesterase activity in cerebral cortex of rats were determined by using Morris maze test and compared among model, acupuncture, moxibustion and control groups. Results:Acupuncture and moxibustion could significantly improve memory of the dementia mimetic rats model, and there existed no obvious difference between acupuncture and moxibustion,it could also increase the M-receptor binding capacity and reduce the activity of cholinesterase in model rats. Conclusion: Acupuncture and moxibustion could improve memory and are helpful in the prevention and treatment of brain dysfunction.
