The Discussion on Some Questions of May Fourth Movement

This paper makes three arguments about May Fourth Movement.First,May Fourth Movement is not only an anti-imperialist patriotic movement,but also is a national awakening movement with which combined patriotic and salvation movement,thought enlightenment movement,cultural reform movement and modernization movement Secondly,instead of completely denying Confucianism and the Chinese traditional culture represented by Confucius,May Fourth Movement opposed cultural autocracy which promoted Confucianism as the official ideology of the Chinese imperial state and abandoned all theories except Confucius.As a matter of fact,with holding high the scientific and democratic banner and throwing off cultural autocracy,May Fourth Movement achieved a cultural renaissance that integrated Chinese culture and Western culture.Thirdly,the main theme of May Fourth Movement is spiritual independence and thought freedom,which came down in one continuous line with the policy ofInclusivenessandFreedom of Thoughtwhich Cai Yuanpei advocated in Beijing University at that time.
