Abstract

Objective:To determine the protective effect of bismuth potassium citrate (BPC) in an experimental model of aspirin induced gastric mucosa lesions in rats. Methods:Gastric mucosa lesions was induced with intraperitoneal administration of aspirin.Rats were divided into control group, injury group,BPC protective group and misoprostol protective group.Rats of two protective groups were pretreated with BPC or misoprostol respectively before induction of gastric mucosa lesions.Blood flow and content of hexosamine were measured.Gastric mucosa was also evaluated macroscopically and histologically. Results:No significant difference in macroscopic injury, histological damage, blood flow,or content of hexosamine was noted between two protective groups. In comparison with injury group, the ulcer index and histological damage in protective groups were significantly decreased,as well as the blood flow and the hexosamine concentration in protective group were significantly increased. Conclusion:BPC as well as misoprostol reduces gastric mucosal lesions and inflammation induced with aspirin in rats through a mechanism involving increase of mucosa blood flow and secretion of mucus.
