A Study on Screening of Thalassemia among Pregnant Women by Hemoglobin Electrophoresis

Objective To explore the application value of hemoglobin electrophoresis in screening of thalassemia among early pregnant women and analyze its incidence of the disease.Methods 6015 early pregnant women were selected from outpatient clinics and detected by blood routine test and hemoglobin electrophoresis from February 2012 to October 2012.The cases with positive screening results were diagnosed definitely by gene diagnosis.Results There were 1 α-thalassemia and 65 β-thalassemia cases by screening in 6015 subjects,in which 62 cases were diagnosed definitely as thalassemia,including 1 α-thalassemia and 61 β-thalassemia cases.The carrier rate of thalassemia gene among the crowd was nearly 1%.Conclusion Carrier rate of thalassemia gene among the early pregnant women in Huzhou is 1.03%.Hemoglobin electrophoresis is an effective method for thalassemia screening.
