Abstract

The different forms of phosphorus and the phytoplankton biomass(Chla) was investigated in shima estuary and its upper reaches in May 2007.The results showed that the particulate organic phosphorus, which was the main component of the particulate phosphorus, was the primary state of phosphorus in shima estuary, and its content accounted for 61.2% of total phosphorus.Meanwhile, the dissolved inorganic phosphorus was the main constituent of the dissolved phosphorus for its content accounted for 72.8% of the dissolved phosphorus. The phosphorus composition of the upper reaches was similar to that of estuary. The research also found that the rainwater leaching effect had a greater impact on the composition of phosphorus;especially the significant increase of the particulate inorganic phosphate was taken as the main feature.Phytoplankton biomass in estuary showed a significantly positive relationship with the total phosphorus and the dissolved organic phosphorus and it indicated that the algae activity in surface water affected the distribution of phosphorus heavily in the estuary.
