Abstract

Objective To understand the smoking behavior and cognitive status among civil servants in Henan province, and provide scientific basis for implementation of tobacco control on civil servants in the future. Methods With the stratified sampling method, the questionnaire survey from May to July in 2008 was carried out among 603 civil servants who were from 18 administrations in Zhengzhou City, Sanmenxia City, and Qixian County. Results The smoking rates were 0 in female and 58.40% in male, and the current smoking rate in male was 48.14%. The male smoking rate increased with their working life increasing (χ2=8.578, P0.05), while decreased with higher educational level (χ2=14.849 0, P0.01); and it had no statistical significance with age and the position titles(P0.05). There were cognitive differences between smokers and non-smokers on the relationship between smoking and disease in male civil servants. The multivariate analysis showed that the male smoking behavior was related with his work life. Conclusion Male civil servants have a high smoking rate, and they need to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and to strengthen their self-health awareness.
