Abstract

OBJECTIVE To ascertain the prevalence of child abuse among college students and to explore the influencing factors, and to provide scientific evidence for intervention measures.METHODS Child abuse experience was surveyed among 1 762 students in a college by anonymous self-administered questionnaire.RESULTS 76.2% of 1 762 college students investigated had abuse experience.Prevalence rate of childhood abuse experience was 59.4% for physical abuse,76.0% of males and 49.2% of females ever had physical abuse experience.61.5% for emotional abuse,69.0% of males and 57.0% of females ever had emotional abuse experience;10.2% for sexual abuse,8.1% of males and 11.5% of females ever had sex abuse experience. There was significant difference between gender in prevalence rate of physical abuse(χ2 = 124.139,P = 0.000)and emotional abuse(χ2 = 25.338,P = 0.000).Compared with the male students, the prevalence rate of sexual abuse was higher in the female students(χ2 = 5.387,P = 0.020).Non-conditional Logistic regression analysis indicated that bad parental marital status(OR = 2.407,P = 0.011)were risk factors for the occurrence of child abuse.Girls(OR = 0.409,P = 0.000)and high level of education of mother(OR = 0.718,P = 0.004)were protective factors for child abuse.CONCLUSION The problem of child abuse among college students is common in China.More attention should be paid to child abuse in order to promote students' healthy development.
