Abstract
A novel class of artificial materials,possessing particular electromagnetic properties,is defined as metamaterials,in which materials with simultaneously negative dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability are called left-handed metamaterials or double negative materials and only with negative dielectric permittivity or magnetic permeability called single negative materials.Methods for realizing metamaterials and nonlinear left-handed metamaterials are introduced.In particular,research progress for second-harmonic generation,propagation of soliton,wave mixing effect in metamaterials is presented.
