Analysis of Metaphor in Light of Relevance Theory

Abstract

This paper first discusses the limitations of the theory of conversational implicature in the interpretation of metaphor,then it focuses on the analysis of metaphor in light of Relevance Theory from the perspective of cognitive pragmatics,indicating that metaphor is loose talk and the comprehension of metaphor is a ostensive-inferential process of linguistic communication,in which the hearer obtains the interpretation with optimal relevance of an utterance by processing a set of contextual assumptions.
