Abstract
A new method is studied for the determination of trace formaldehyde in food based on its reaction with peptone in the medium of FeCl 3 and HCl solution to form strongly a purple compound. It′s absorption is proportional to formaldehyde concentration in the range of 0 11 0 mg·L -1 .The recoveries are 95 08%103 5%.The relative standard deviation is 1 19% ( n =6).In contrast with national standard method, the new method is more sensitive and convenience, requiring less reagent, and it takes only 10 minutes for the whole determination process. This method is good for formaldehyde determination in site, and has been used to determine formaldehyde in shelled shrimps
