Establishment of assessment indicators for clinical transfusion management and evaluation of its effect

Objective To establish assessment indicators on clinical blood transfusion management,to regularly supervise the implementation,to gradually standardize clinical transfusion,and to improve the scientific and rational use of blood in hospital.Methods In the first half of 2013,all transfusion application forms and 20 to 30 transfusion records were inspected.An analysis was conducted on the performance of six indicators every month,including the trend in the clinical use of blood,clinical transfusion application,transfusion records and others.Results Compared to the same period of 2012,the total amount of blood transfusion dropped by 30.92% in 2013,while the number of patients decreased by 6.82%.The amount of blood transfusion in surgical department decreased by 23.90%,which was lower than the reduction in surgical cases at 12.59%.The average blood use in each patient decreased by 5.89% in 2013.The rate of component transfusion was99.93% in six months.Until the end of June,the percentages of qualified and appropriate blood transfusion in surgical and nonsurgical departments have gone up to 94.5% and 96.7%,respectively.The rates of qualified transfusion record forms and the rates of clinical blood use arrangement have shown no apparent improvement.Conclusion The establishment and the evaluation of clinical blood management and assessment indicators can effectively improve the management of standardized transfusion in hospitals,and thus,eventually achieving the aim of scientific and rational utilization of blood.
