Abstract

ZHANG Dai was the greatest essayist in the late Ming Dynasty. Because of his personal and social background, he became a cynic scholar. His essays delineate a panoramic view of the late Ming society. There are mixed feelings in his essays. The most noted is a strong sentiment of meloncholy and nostalgia. ZHANG Dai′s pieces are characterized by truthfulness, natural grace and elegance.
