Abstract

Stream flow of the river section of 320 km in length in the lower reaches of the Tarim River was cut off when the Daxihaizi Reservoir was built in 1972,and a continual serious drawdown of groundwater level occurred since then.Along with implementing an intermittent stream water conveyance to the lower reaches of the Tarim River from May 2000,the groundwater level in the lower reaches begins to rise. The groundwater monitoring section,i.e.the Yengisu section,is located in Yengisu Village 61 km from the Daxihaizi Reservoir. In this paper, the response and change of groundwater level to the stream water conveyance along the Yengisu section in the lower reaches of the Tarim River are lucubrated based on the monitoring data of groundwater level along the section during the period from the first stream water conveyance to the seventh stream water conveyance by applying Processing Modflow, and a prediction model of groundwater level change is developed. On which the change of groundwater level after conveying stream water for 10 years is predicted. The predicted result reveals that the response width of groundwater level in the lower reaches of the Tarim River to the intermittent stream water conveyance will be basically within 3 km away from the river channel along both riversides if the intermittent stream water conveyance with current volume is maintained, and the width of natural vegetation restoration will be similar.
