To Explore Obscure Words in Shi Shuo Xin Yu

Abstract

The book, Shi Shuo Xin Yu (世说新语) is mainly about the anecdotes and behaviors of the noble class during the period from the end of Han dynasty to East Jin dynasty. Many researchers in past dynasties have written lots of papers about the words in the book. And several specialized books about Shi Shuo Xin Yu have been published in recent years. All of the studies have laid a foundation for us not only to understand the content of the book correctly but also to know the people, historic events and society in that period. However, there are many different ideas about understanding some words in the book of Shi Shuo Xin Yu, because of the book' s spoken narrating style, special society background and thinking ways. This paper aims to do some further study in several obscure words in Shi Shuo Xin Yu with the help of previous researchers' achievements.
