Relationship between cyclin D1 and P16 expression and clinic pathological characteristics in lung cancer

Abstract

Objective To study the relationship between cyclin D1 and P16 expression and clinical pathological characteristics in lung cancer.Methods Cyclin D1 and P16 were detected in 59 lung cancer tissues and 47 tumor-adjacent non cancer lung tissues by immunohistochemical method.Results The positive rates of cyclin D1 and P16 expression were 61.0%, 40.7% in samples of lung cancers, and 17.0%, 76.6% in tumor adjacent non cancer lung tissues, respectively. The over expression rate of cyclin D1 in cancer tissues was significantly higher than that of tumor adjacent non cancer lung tissues ( P 0.01), whereas the positive rate of P16 was significantly lower in cancer tissues than that of tumor adjacent non cancer lung tissues ( P 0.01). It was found that the cyclin D1 and P16 expression in lung cancer tissues had no relation to the patients'age, gender, tumor pathological type, lymph node metastasis as well as tumor stage ( P 0.05);however, there was significant association between cyclin D1 and P16 expression and tumor differentiation ( P 0.05). In lung cancer tissues, the expression of cyclin D1 negatively correlated with P16 protein expression.Conclusion The over expression of cyclin D1 and loss of P16 protein are closely related to the pathogenesis of lung cancer, and could be used to evaluate the tumor differentiation. The reciprocal expression of cyclin D1 and P16 may prove to constitute an early event in the carcinogenesis of lung cancer. \[
