The expression of survivin gene in gastric cancerous tissue and its clinical significance

Objective To explore the expression of survivin gene in gastric cancerous tissue and clinical significance.Methods All the samples were obtained from patients with gastric cancer who underwent surgery in China-Japan union Hospital from January 1998 to May 2003.Immunohistochemistry was used to detect survivin expression in 54 resected gastric cancerous tissue,27 vicinity of the gastric cancerous tissue and 10 normal gastric tissue.The relationship between survivin expression with clinical index and.prognosis were analyzed.Results Survivin expression rate in the resected gastric cancerous tissue and in the vicinity of the gastric cancerous tissue were 14.8% and 38.7%,respectively.There is no survivin expression in normal gastric tissue.The difference of survivin expression among three groups were significant(P0.05).No statistical difference was observed in the survivin expression in sexuality,ages,lymph node metastasis and clinical TNM stages.But survivin expression is relevant with differentiation and prognosis of gastric cancer.Higher survivin expression in poorly differentiated group than in well-differentiated group were observed(P0.05).Prognosis of lower survivin expression group is better than prognosis of higher survivin expression group.(P0.05).Conclusion Survivin is highly expressed in gastric cancerous tissue.Survivin expression is closely related with degree of malignacy and prognosis.This study suggest that survivin play a great role in the carcinogenesis,growth of gastric cancer and it be used as an index in evaluation of prognosis.
