The Incorrect Notion of Considering A Foreign Language as a ”tool” and Its Counter-measures in University

The notion that a foreign language is a ”tool” in fact hinders people from learning a foreign language well. Foreign language teaching at university should attach first importance to the education of humanity and literature. Only in this way can students have a good command of a foreign language. It is quite necessary that a new foreign language teaching norm should be adopted in university. First, learners-centered principle should be followed in foreign language teaching. Second, textbooks should be content-based rather than compiled in accordance with grammar or vocabulary. Third, students should be exposed to original works and masterpieces.
