Further Discussion on Polysemy of Modal Verbs in English

Abstract

Through comparison and contrast with relevant views on the meaning of English modals,it is proposed that both metaphor and metonymy play a role in the semantic expansion of English modals according to relevant theories in cognitive semantics and gives detailed information about the process of English modals' semantic expansion.The interrelationship between the meanings of English modals is explained.
