Study on English Modals' Meaning

Abstract

Scholars have been making a deep study of the English modals in an attempt to find out their common qualities and establish a model to sum up and generalize their meanings.Palmer classifies the English modals into three categories: epistemic;dynamic and deontic,which basically generalizes their meanings.Analysis of the meaning of English modals by case study shows that the main factors for indeterminacy of the meanings of the English modals are gradience and merger.
