Abstract

Objective It is to study the association between metabolic syndrome(MS) and carotid atherosclerosis, and to evaluate its clinical significance. Methods 56 MS patients were enrolled according to MS diagnostic standard of the new worldwide definition commented by International Diabetes Federation(IDF)(MS group).48 non-MS subjects served as a control(non-MS group).Carotid arteries of all subjects of two groups were detected by color Doppler ultrasound. Results The carotid artery intima-media thickness(IMT)((1.09±0.31) mm),plaque index(1.13±0.85),plaque total scores(1.71±1.82)and plaque occurrence rate(67.4%) of MS group were much higher than those of the control group((0.72±0.22) mm,0.28±0.53,0.41±0.79 and 16.9%)(P0.05).Conclusions MS may induces and accelerates the course of atherosclerosis.Routinely detecting carotid artery of MS cases by ultrasound is beneficial to predict and control coronary and other artery disease much earlier.
