Therapeutic efficacy of metformin combined with pioglitazone in treatment of type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Objective To investigate the therapeutic efficacy and safety of metformin combined with pioglitazone in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Methods A total of 120 patients with type 2 diabetes, who received treatment in our hospital from March 2010 to May 2012, were equally divided into control group and combination treatment group using a random number table. The control group received oral metformin, while the combination treatment group received oral pioglitazone tablets in addition to metformin. The blood glucose and insulin levels, body mass index (BMI), and adverse effects were observed before and after treatment. Results There were no significant differences in blood glucose and insulin levels between the control group and combination treatment group before treatment (P0.05). Both groups showed significant improvement in the blood glucose and insulin levels after treatment, and the combination treatment group had significantly more improvement than the control group (P0.05). There were no significant differences in BMI and adverse effects between the two groups before and after treatment (P 0.05). Conclusion Metformin combined with pioglitazone can effectively reduce blood glucose level, insulin resistance, and risk of adverse effects in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
