Abstract

Objective To compare the value of DNA ploidy analysis by DNA image cytometry( ICM-DNA) and exfoliative cytologic examination in diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion and ascites. Methods ICM-DNA and exfoliative cytology were used to detect one hundred and fifty-eight patients with peural effusion and ascites and their sensitivity and specificity were compared. Results The sensitivity of ICM-DNA and exfoliative cytology were 72. 50% ( 58 /80) ,47. 50% ( 38 /80) respectively, there was significant difference between them ( P 0. 01) . The specificity of ICM-DNA and exfoliative cytology were 93. 59%( 73 /78) ,96. 15% ( 75 /78) respectively, there was no significant difference ( P 0. 05) . Conclusion The combination of ICM- DNA ploidy analysis and exfoliative cytologic examination can provide the great significance for differential diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion and ascites.
