Surveillance of antibiotic resistance of 1264 strains of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium in Chongqing

Abstract

Objective To investigate the antimicrobial resistance of E. faecalis and E. faecium isolated from seven teaching hospitals in Chongqing during 2011. Methods Six general hospitals and one children hospital were involved in this program. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was carried out according to the unified protoco1. The data were analyzed by WHONET 5. 5 software according to CLSI 2011 breakpoints. Results A total of 589 nonduplicate E. faecalis and 675 nonduplicate E. faecium isolates were collected. The strains were still highly susceptible to linezolid,vancomycin and teicoplanin. The overall resistance rate was less than 2%. The prevalences of vancomycin-resistant E. faecalis and E. faecium were 0. 3% and 0. 7%,respectively. The percentages of E. faecalis resistant to ampicillin,penicillin and nitrofurantoin were 14. 8%,8. 6% and 5. 1%,respectively. About 46. 9% of E. faecalis isolates were resistant to gentamicin( high level). The E. faecium strains were more resistant to most drugs tested than E. faecalis. About 90% E. faecium strains were resistant to ampicillin and penicillin,respectively. The resistance percentages of E. faecalis and E. faecium isolates between adults and children were different. Conclusion There is an obvious difference between the antibiotic resistance of E. faecalis and E. faecium isolates. Therefore,monitoring drug resistance of Enterococcus has great significance to clinical treatment.
