The effect of acute urinary retention in men with benign prostate hyperplasia on serum prostate specific antigen levels

Objective To study the effect of acute urinary retention(AUR) in men with benign prostate hyperplasia(BPH) on the concentration of serum prostate specific antigen(PSA) elevation.Methods The serum PSA concentrations were measured in 16 men who had AUR with BPH immediately and one week after relief of urinary retention,and were compared with those of 51 men who did not have AUR with BPH at the same time before operations.The PSA concentrations measured before and after therapies in AUR group were also compared.Results The mean concentration of serum PSA in AUR group and non-AUR group were 19.5±11.6μg/L and 3.4±2.2μg/L respectively.The difference between the PSA concentrations of those two groups was significant(t=14.26,P0.001).In AUR group the mean serum PSA levels of BPH patients declined to 7.1±6.2μg/L one week after relief of urinary retention.The difference was also significant(t=8.96,P0.01).Conclusion Acute urinary retention in men with benign prostate hyperplasia could dramatically elevate serum PSA.But this elevation will gradually decrease to low levels one week after relief of urinary retention.
