Abstract
Objective:To investigate the association between metabolic syndrome and diabetic nephropathy and diabetic retinopathy. Methods:The clinic documents of 334 patients with type 2 diabetes were divided into two groups based on with/ without metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of diabetic nephropathy and diabetic retinopathy was compared in two groups. The associations between diabetic nephropathy and diabetic retinopathy and the major components of metabolic syndrome were analyzed. Results:The patients with the metabolic syndrome had a higher prevalence of diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy than that in patients without the syndrome(P 0.05).The nephropathy had a positive correlation with age, ascend duration of diabetes, smoking, systolic blood pressure(SBP),diastolic blood pressure(DBP),glycosylated HbA1c and TG.Using univariate analysis it was also found that the nephropathy had a negative correlation with HDL-C.The retinopathy was associated with age, ascend duration of diabetes,SBP,DBP and glycosylated HbA1c.In a multiple logistic regression analysis, after adjusting the gender, age, the ascend duration of diabetes, smoking and glycosylated HbA1c,the metabolic syndrome had a predominant relation with diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy(OR= 4.281,1.889;95%CI:2.064-8.879,1.091-3.270).Conclusion:The metabolic syndrome is closely associated with the prevalence of diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy. There will be a clinical significance in preventing and treating diabetic microvascular complications by improving metabolic syndrome.
