Carotid endarterectomy and endovascular stenting in the treatment of carotid artery stenosis

Objective To evaluate the application of endarterectomy and endovascular stenting in the treatment of carotid artery stenosis. Methods According to the level and degree of the stenosis, carotid endarterectomy was used in 104 cases and endovascular stenting in 17 cases of carotid artery stenosis. The effect of treatment and the causes of complications were analysed. Results All the patients had successful results. The incidence of severe postoperative complications was low, especially in the group with carotid endarterectomy. Conclusions Carotid endarterectomy still remains to be the main surgical method in the treatment of carotid stenosis. Endovascular stenting could be applied in patients with carotid stenosis that can not be reached by conventional operation.
