Abstract
Objective To investigate the relationship between the expression of p53 tumor suppressor gene protein, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and biological characters or prognosis in gastric cancer Methods Ninety one surgical specimens of gastric cancer were selected at the Affiliated Hospital of Luzhou Medical College and the 70 male and 21 female patients were aged from 31 to 71 years. The expression of p53 protein and PCNA was determined by immunohistochemistry SABC method Results ①The incidences of p53 protein and PCNA positive expression were 62.6% and 65.9%, respectively ②There was a significant correlation between the expression of p53 protein and the invasion of tumors, but no significant correlation between the p53 protein expression and the dimensions of tumors ③There was a significant correlation between the expression of PCNA and the dimensions or the invasive degrees of gastric carcinomas ④Significant correlation was observed between p53 protein, PCNA expression and lymph node metastasis ⑤There was a significant correlation between the expression of p53 protein, PCNA and the differentiation degrees or the histological types Increasing positive expression of p53 protein and PCNA occurred in poorly differentiated tumor cells ⑥In patients with positive p53 protein expression, the 2 years survival rate was significantly lower than that in patients with negative p53 protein expression In patients with strong PCNA expression, the 2, 3, 5 years survival rates were significantly lower than that in patients with faint PCNA expression Conclusion Patients with positive expression of p53 protein and strong expression of PCNA have a very poor prognosis and the detection of p53 protein and PCNA, especially PCNA, can be used to evaluate the malignant degree and predict the prognosis of gastric cancer
