Analysis on the Problems of Urban Area Structure and Their Optimization in Chongqing Metropolis

Chongqing metropolis is one of biggest interior cities in China and economy center of upper reaches of Changjiang River, and it is located at tail area of Three_Gorges Reservoir where eco_environment is very fragile. As development of economy and society for recent years, urban area structure of Chongqing metropolis has been changed and appeared a series of grave problems that affected its sustained development. This paper explored detailed features and delineated main problems existing in evaluation proceed of Chongqing metropolis area structure as follows: 1) The land suitable to urban construction is shortage, which accounts for only 12.32% of total area; 2) Human being resident is very crowed, density of population is so high that there are 30000 persons per square kilometer in inner city (for instance in Yuzhong district); 3) Urban land use structure is imbalance, for example, proportion of industrial area is too large (it accounts for 23.36% of total inner city area), and that of business and afforesting-fallow lands are on low side, which prevents Chongqing metropolis from development of the third estate; 4) Urban functional districts are mixed, and phenomenon of city heat islands is protruding; 5) Urban geological disasters become more and more frequented, and environmental problems are more and more grave. Based on analysis of these problems, authors, form eight views of industrial, land utilization and functional structure, etc., suggested corresponding optimization countermeasures of area structure of Chongqing metropolis.
