The Markedness of Themes and Its Application to Translation

Abstract

According to Halliday,themes can be divided into unmarked themes and marked themes.Marked themes can perform various functions in a discourse,such as transmitting various types of information,highlighting focal information,contrasting important information,ensuring intrasentential and intersentential coherence,and achieving stylistic effects.The choice of an appropriate theme in discourse translation is of great significance.
