Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between serum vascular endothelial growth factor(s-VEGF) and clinico-pathological parameters of gastric carcinoma, and to investigate whether s-VEGF can be used as an index for early diagnosis of this disease. Methods The s-VEGF levels were detected in 31 patients with gastric cancer before operation and on the first day after operation respectively by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay, and the levels of s-VEGF in 13 patients with chronic gastritis were detected simultaneously. Results The levels of s-VEGF in the gastric carcinoma patients were higher than those in control group( P 0.05);s-VEGF increased with clinical stage ( P 0.05);s-VEGF fell on the first day after operation in the patients undergoing radical resection ( P 0.05),while didn't fall in those undergoing palliative resection ( P 0.05). Conclusion The s-VEGF level is associated with clinco-pathological parameters and contributes to genesis and development of gastric carcinoma. The detection of s-VEGF cannot serve as an index for early diagnosis of gastric carcinoma.
