Research Progresses on Land Use and Land Cover Change as Well as Flood Disaster of Dongting Lake

Dongting Lake has an important position strategically due to its functions of flood control of Yangtze River,a species gene pool and a grain production base.However,its functions and benefits decrease resulting from immoderate exploitation and utilization.Understanding the natural and socio-economic attributes of Dongting Lake and discovering its inherent law are helpful for the rational allocation of resources,environmental protection and the sustainable development of economy.This paper summarizes the research progresses on Dongting Lake,including land use and land cover change(LUCC),disasters of flood and waterlog etc.The result shows that both the depth and breadth of research on Dongting Lake are not enough.As a lake connecting with a river,the difficulties of research come from complexity and uncertainty,inadequate creativity for research,being hard to get basic data and serious schistosomiasis in the Lake area.Then the research prospects of LUCC and its hydrological effects and controlling,assessment and regionalization of flood risk in Dongting Lake region are discussed.
