Expression of S100A4,S100A6 and S100P and their significance in non-small cell lung cancer

Abstract

Purpose To investigate the expression levels of S100A2,S100A4 and S100P mRNA in patients with non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC),and to explore the relationship between S100 family and the pathogenesis and metastasis of NSCLC.Methods RT-PCR method were used to detect the expression levels of S100A2,S100A4 and S100P mRNA in cancer tissues and corresponding adjacent lung tissues of 29 patients with NSCLC and normal lung tissues of 12 patients with chest trauma and inflammation.Results(1) The expression of S100A2,S100A4 and S100P mRNA was significantly higher in NSCLC tissues than that in adjacent lung cancer tissues and normal lung tissues.(2) S100A2,S100A4 and S100P mRNA expression levels were also significantly higher than that in corresponding adjacent lung tissues and normal lung tissues in adenocarcinomas;S100A4 and S100P mRNA expression levels were significantly higher than that in normal lung tissues in squamous cell carcinoma.(3) Based on clinical TNM stages,the mRNA levels of the three members were significantly higher in cancer specimens with Ⅱand Ⅲ stage than that inⅠstage.S100P mRNA expression in Ⅲ stage NSCLC was higher than that in Ⅰstage.(4) The expression of S100A2,S100A4,and S100P mRNA in NSCLC with lymph node metastasis was also significantly higher than that in NSCLC without lymph node metastasis.(5) The mRNA level of S100A4 was significantly higher in cancer tissues with carcinoma embolism of vein than that without carcinoma embolism of vein.Conclusions Over-expression of S100A2,S100A4 and S100P mRNA may play an important role in the pathogenesis and development of human NSCLC.These results suggest a potential role of S100 family as a novel therapeutic target for the clinical management of NSCLC.
