A case control study of quetiapine with lithium therapeutic mania

Objective:To compare the therapeutic effects and safety between admininstration of clozapine with lithium carbonate and administration of quetiapine with lithium carbonate for treating mania.Methods:60 patients diagnosed as mania according to CCMD-3 were randomly divided into two groups,one group receiving 6 weeks of administration of quetiapine with lithium carbonate(quetiapine group) and the other receiving 6 weeks of administration of clozapine with lithium carbonate(clozapine group).The therapeutic effects were evaluated by BRMS and side effects were evaluated by TESS.Results: Both quetiapine group and clozapine group showed significant and similar improvement in symptoms of mania,with effective rate of 93.3% for the former and 90% for the latter.But,quetiapine group showed significantly lower scores of side effects by TESS than did clozapine group.Conclusions: administration of quetiapine with lithium carbonate can be effective and safe in treatment of mania,which may possess beneficial compliance with mania patients.
