With conjunctival limbal stem cells transplantation in treatment of pterygium

Objective To observe with conjunctival limbal stem cells transplantation in treatment of pterygium.Methods Retrospective analysis was made of our hospital from April 2006 to September 2009.Ninety-one patients(102 eyes) of pterygium patients,according to different operation mode,were divided into two groups:group A simple excision of pterygium in 34 eyes(primary),group B with conjunctival flap transplantation of corneal limbal stem cell in 68 eyes(a total of 57 cases 68 eyes of 11 cases,65 eyes,primary and 3 eyes recurrent).All patients were followed up for 3 months to 1 year.Postoperative observation of was made of conjunctival and corneal repair after operation,complication and recurrence of pterygium,and its curative effect was evaluated.Statistical analysis of two operation methods was made on the effect difference.Results By comparing operation method and postoperative recurrence rate,simple excision of pterygium group had 4 eyes recurred,the recurrence rate being 11.76%,while conjunctival limbal stem cells transplantation in treatment of pterygium surgery group had no relapse,recurrence rate being 0.Both groups had no complications which seriously threat the visual function of the patients.Conclusion It shows that with conjunctival limbal stem cells transplantation in treatment of pterygium group has a lower recurrence rate than the simple excision of pterygium group.
