Effect of treating shivering after intraspinal anesthesia with butorphanol

Objective To observe the clinical effect of treatment of shivering after intraspinal anesthesia with butorphanol.Method Seventy patients (ASA I～II) with shivering (under intraspinal anesthesia) were randomly distributed to two groups receiving an injection of 1 mg of butorphanol (group B,n=35) or 5 ml 0.9% NS i.v.(group N,n=35),then took down the patients' MAP,SpO2 and the scores of shivering at the 3rd,5th min.Results There was no significant difference between the two groups on MAP and SpO2,but the cure rate of shivering in group B was 94.29%(33/35)compared with 2.86%(1/35) in group N.The cure rate of group B (butorphanol 1 mg) was significantly higher than group N(P0.01).Conclusion Butorphanol is remarkably effective in treating shivering after intraspinal anesthesia and with little side effect.
