Abstract

For investigating the cytoplasmic effects of CMS on major characters of rice hybrids, one set of isonuclear alloplasmic CMS Lines(A Lines) of Zhenxiqiuguang, including 3 different cytoplasms from Hainan male sterile wild rice (WA type), Hainan red awned wild rice(HL type) and India chinsurah BoroⅡ(BT type), and the maintainer line(B line), 18 Indica or Japonica restorer lines(R lines) were used to make hybrids of A lines×R lines(AF 1) and B line×R lines(BF 1). The effects were indicated by AF 1-BF 1 or (AF 1-BF 1)/BF 1(relative effect). The results showed: (1) Significantly negative effects were observed on seed-setting percentage, filled grain number per panicle, grain yield per plant and plant height, and significantly positive effects on heading stage and 1000-grain weight. The cytoplasmic effects on panicle number per plant, spikelet number per panicle and the eight rice quality characters were insignificant. No significant difference was found between the effect and the relative effect. (2) The size of the effect concerned with the restored property of the sterile cytoplasm. The A lines of BT type were restored more easily than those of HL and WA types, its effects were smaller; while the A lines of WA type were restored difficultly and its effects were the biggest. (3) The cytoplasmic effects had no significant difference between inter-subspecies and inter-varietal combinations, but the effects of hybrids were affected by the restoring ability from R lines. (4) The size of the cytoplasmic effect for a character depended mainly on the degree of correlation between the trait and fertility.
