Abstract

OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of serum from Guxinkang-fed rats on the activities of osteoblasts and osteoclasts.METHODS Primary cultured osteoblasts and osteoclasts were isolated from the skull and the limb of newborn rats respectively, and MTT assay was used to evaluate cell viability.AKP activity was used to evaluate the function of osteoblasts. The numbers of resorption pits on born surface were used to evaluate the activity of osteoclasts.RESULTS Compared with control group, the serum containing Guxinkang dose-despendently promoted the proliferation of osteoblasts and enhanced the secretary of AKP from osteoblasts after two days incubation(P0.01).The serum containing Guxinkang also decreased the numbers of resorption pits on born surface.CONCLUSION Guxinkang promotes the proliferation and differentiation of osteobalsts and inhibits the activities of osteoclasts, which indicates a potential clinical use against osteoporosis.
