Tendency analysis of maternal death in Sichuan province from 2004 to 2008

Objective To provide scientific evidence for taking enforceable and effective measures to decrease maternal mortality rate.Methods We investigated and analysed the tendency of maternal death and its associated factors in 488 cases of the last 5 years.Results The primary causes of maternal death were obstetric bleeding and complications of pregnancy.Obstetric bleeding,especially postpartum haemorrhage,was significantly decreased.Complications of pregnancy were gradually increased.Conclusion Based on various causes of death,it is suggested to put forward practical interventions according to different areas and associated problems,take full advantage of the maternity and child health project,enhance the training,promote appropriate obstetric technologies and standardize the basic operations to decrease maternal mortality.
