AN ESTIMATION ON GAS GENERATION OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE LANDFILL

Abstract

A municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill can generate tremendous quantities of gas and leachate during its decomposition. It can be looked as a biochemical reactor. Material in the landfill includes partially biodegraded organic material and the other inorganic waste materials originally placed in the landfill. Gas generation phases in MSW landfill can be divided into five parts. They are aerobic, aerobic/acid generation, transition to anaerobic, anaerobic, and transition to stabilization. The estimation of the rate of landfill gas generation is most important for designing landfill gas collection and control system. In the present paper the method that estimate the gas generation in the landfill is studied. Two simple modeling equations that can be used to estimate the gas generation rate of landfill and gas extraction well are presented in the paper. A calculation example of the gas extraction well is given with one of the method. The results show that the two equations is applicable for the estamition of the gas generation rate of the landfill.
