Abstract
The nature of Chinese characters is the basic core research in Chinese characters science. Different views on the nature of Chinese characters affect the research standard of Chinese characters theory, and the relevant instruction and application. The paper gives a brief survey of the various views on the nature of Chinese characters, and presents from the formation of Chinese characters that Chinese characters are defined as meaning-expressive, which discloses the nature of Chinese characters.
