On the stories of the Sui and Tang Dynasties in Zaju of the Yuan Dynasty

There are plentiful stories of the Sui and Tang Dynasties in Zaju of the Yuan Dynasty, which consist of three themes: stories about the heroes in Wagangzhai, stories about Wei Chigong and stories about Xue Rengui. These stories are mostly fictitious. They are interrelated in content and constitute a comparatively complete system. Therefore, it can be concluded that they are from shuohua, that is, telling stories, an artistic form of performance in the Song and Yuan Dynasties. Through the dramas, we can know the development of the stories in Sui and Tang Dynasties include: 1) Getting rid of the restraint of historical records and forming the independent system began to take shape. 2) Making multi-clue stories with no integrated story system. 3) Focusing on heroic figures. Through the dramas, we can also explore the implied specialities of the common people's cultural mentality: 1) the mentality of hero worship; 2) Fabricate history and highlight the humble; 3) The desire of being rich and obtaining psychic gratification; 4) the aesthetic mentality of seeking novelty.
