Abstract

Objective To investigate the precautionary effect of AduoLa Fuzhenglin(ADL) on the histological and ultrastructural injury to rats′ thymus and spleen induced by microwave exposure. Methods Two hundred and eighty male Wistar rats were randomized into short term(14 d) and long term(28 d) ADL preventin groups, with 140 rats in each. Each group was randomized into five subgroups, three of which had been treated with 0.75,1.5 and 3 g/(kg·d) ADL before they were exposed to 30 mW/cm2 microwave radiation for 15 min.The subgroups without ADL treatment or radiation were used as control, and the one with radiation alone as radiation subgroup. The changes in histology and ultrastructure in rats′ thymus and spleen were observed by light and transmission electron microscopy at 6 h,7 d and 14 d after microwave exposure. Results In short-term group, obvious histological and ultrastructural damage to rats′ spleen of radiation subgroup and 1.5 g/(kg·d) ADL subgroup were observed at 6 h and 7 d after administration of ADL was stopped. The pathological changes in 1.5 g/(kg·d) and 3 g/(kg·d) ADL subgroups improved significantly at 6 h and 7d after ADL was suspended and the injuries recovered nearly at 14 d.Long-term group was similar to short-term one. Conclusion ADL has proved to protect against the structural injury to the spleen caused by 30 mW/cm2 microwave exposure.1.5 g/(kg·d) is an effective and economical dosage.Giving ADL for 14 d has the same effect as giving ADL for 28 d.
