Abstract

The bird resource in the Shantou coastal wetland,Guangdong was investigated.About 100 species birds belonging to 31 families and 15 orders were recorded, among which there were 43 Palaeartic Realm species,45 Oriental Realm species and 12 distribute widely species. The result showed that there was clear seasonal variation in the bird species diversity.Among all the birds,10 species were the second-ranked protected birds of national importance in China and 43 species could be found in Chinese– Japanese Bird Protection Agreement. The species and amount of the major birds in five wetland samples were investigated. The result indicated that Shantou coastal wetland was the wintering habitat of waterbirds.Diversity index of the bird community was higher in the wetland of Sanyu Wei(3.230 6) and Liuhe Wei(3.228 3),and lower in Haojiang Mouth(1.981).The diversity index of the bird community was mainly influenced by the amount and the evenness of bird species. The management and protection of bird resources were also discussed in this paper.
