The Last New Change in Tang Poetry:On the Artistic Innovation of Late Tang Rhythmic Poems

Abstract

Scholars in the troubled period of Late Tang Dynasty possessed a strong sense of poetic innovation and transferred their political passion to their poems.In general,Late Tang poems moved towards argumentation and popularization,with their old style declining and their new style flourishing.Qilv and Qijue,the two most typical poetic styles,represented the artistic innovation and art level of the poetry in Late Tang Dynasty,during which the two poetic styles were most prosperous.Qilv poetry showed different artistic sources and assumed various artistic styles.Meanwhile,a number of great masters came to the fore.Qilv poems in Late Tang Dynasty were most original in that current affairs were described and proper comments made by means of Qilv,their two representatives being LuoYin and Du Xunhe.Qijue in Late Tang Dynasty became a universally popularized style. Its main innovation was reflected in such aspects as:comprehensive exploration of the forms,novel design,effects of music beauty, reasoning skill,language achievement and aesthetic interest.
