Abstract
The content of geospatial metadata is studied from different aspects: geospatial metadata consist of information that describe both a data set itself and the relation among different data sets; geospatial metadata are classified as standard metadata, common metadata and user-defined metadata according to their normative degree; and the method of representing geospatial metadata by XML is analyzed. At last, an XML-based geospatial metadata system GeoMeta is designed. The architecture and the function of different parts of GeoMeta are explored first, and then XML-based storage strategies and query strategies of geospatial metadata are introduced in details.
