New Interpretations of Classical Poetry and its Modernity in the Perspective of China's Modern Poetics

Based on the theoretical perspective of Chinese Modern Poetics and in the historical context of consistent development of the theory and practice of the criticism of poetry,this paper discusses the critical practices of Zhu Ziqing,Yu Pingbo,George Yeh(Ye Gongchao),Cheng Qianfan,Zhao Luorui who reexamine the classic poems with a modern consciousness and analyze the meaning,syntax and profound implication of classical poetry by means of new interpretation methods and discourses.In terms of three case studies which focuses on the interpretation of Tao Yuanming's Returning to the my Farm(归园田居) and Drinking(饮酒),Du Fu's Moonlit Night(月夜) and Li Shangyin's Zither(锦瑟) by Cheng Qianfan,George Yeh and Yu Pingbo,Zhao Luorui respectively,this paper illustrates the distinct significance of their new criticism so as to reveal the significant roles played by a group writer-scholars among which the above-said persons are.With their valuable contributions in promoting the modern transformation of the tradition of classical poetry for the benefit of creation and criticism of modern vernacular poetry,thus their critical practice has gained significance in the modern Chinese history of poetics.
