SOCIALIZATION OF GIS AND GIS FOR THE PUBLIC

Abstract

Following the specialization and profession stages,GIS is developed towards the stage of socialization. At this stage,GIS is expected to provide information service for the public. Based on the analysis of the development of GIS, the authors put forward a new concept,i.e.,GIS for the Public which means “GIS ought to serve the public with information and to assist them to make decisions” GIS for the Public is characterized by its information service as compared with traditional GIS.The general characteristics,technologies and applications of GIS for the Public are stated concisely.Finally, a brief introduction of “Wuhan Now” public inquiring system developed by the authors and the development of GIS for the Pubic in future are given.
