Abstract

Based on the analyses of the current situations and existing problems of the availability of GIS data in China, this paper presents some suggestions on the pricing and public availability of GIS data. The proposed establishment of Special Open GIS Data Zones in the more developed coastal cities and regions which are already opened to foreign investors and visitors will make the business and civil applications of GIS to be more useful and legal. This will enable GIS to help to foster economic development as well as to serve the people of China better.
