Abstract
In China, rural development has always been relied on to solve issues concerning agriculture, countryside and farmers. After analysing four periods of rural development experience in China, namely the imperial era,the republic period, pre-reform PRC period and post-reform PRC period,it is concluded that rural development in China has undergone transformations from tradition to modernization, from a singlesquire-oriented style to diversified government-centered model, and from a simple form to an integrated form. Finally, the paper points out that the integrated, diverse and innovative rural development will be the path to a balanced urban-rural development in order to attain the goals of rural modernization and sustainable development.
